Significant growth expected through 2027
A new report by ResearchandMarkets.com, a leading marketing and research organization based in Ireland, reports that the global citric acid market “is expected to witness a significant growth rate” through 2027.
Citric acid is a white, crystalline, water-soluble, tricarboxylic acid that is derived, primarily, from limes and lemons. This makes it a very sustainable natural resource.
Over the decades, citric acid has been used in several products and in a diverse group of industries, including the following:
- Food service, where it is often used as a preservative
- Cosmetics, where it is utilized as a safe but effective exfoliant
- Pharmaceuticals, to help control pH levels in products
- In agriculture as a natural fungal agent, killing or inhibiting the growth of fungus
- In cleaning solutions, including disinfectants and sanitizers
The Research and Market report indicated that the greatest growth in the use of citric acid will be in the food service industry. However, citric acid is increasingly finding a home in the professional cleaning industry.
“This is because the key ingredients in citric acid are naturally derived, making this a very environmentally friendly product,” says Lee Chen, President and COO of ProNatural Brands, LLC, manufacturers of cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants using citric acid as their key ingredient.
“Plus, over the years, citric acid has been evaluated many times and proven to be effective when used for cleaning and disinfecting.”
In fact, Chen points out that at least one citric acid disinfectant is EPA registered and has been added to List N, a directory of cleaning agents, disinfectants, and sanitizers complied by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
To get on List N, cleaning agents must be evaluated and proven to kill the pathogen that causes coronavirus.
The ResearchandMarket report also indicates that the use of citric acid will be greatest in the Asia-Pacific region of the world, with most of the consumption in countries such as China and India.
As to why the growth in citric acid products in professional cleaning, According to Lee Chen, CEO of ProNatural Brands, LLC, one reason is because of overusing traditional disinfectants during the pandemic. “Facility managers and cleaning workers now want a safer, healthier, but still effective way to clean and disinfect. Citric acid is a solid alternative.”
